Week 6 Open Access Journals

I found using Open Access Journals extremely easy this week, maybe it was my turn at lotto winning with keywords based on my subject or question I am researching.

I believe I found the perfect article that will help me with my research article titled The Importance of Management and Leadership in a Changing Business Environment. I was immediately informed on what a manager is as the article defined this as primarily an administrator. Within a sentence or two, what a leader should be describing this as an established relationship between the leading and the led. The article continuously compared leadership to management. I enjoyed comparisons and now see leadership as a business perspective and managing as achieving business objectives. I’ve seen this before, but I found everything understandable and credible as the article used the 80% science and 20% art idea of how to lead or manage. It touches on a history of leadership and how it has changed, while looking at psychological considerations.

I have a better understanding of managers and leaders as many of my questions were clearly answered.  My passed articles as good as the information was, there position sat on the fence suggesting there is a little of both in one another. There was never a clear cut answer this is the role of the manager this is the role of the leader. I now have that, I am not saying or agreeing that managers and leaders only do xyz, but there base reasons for carrying the title manager or leader now has purpose in my mind.

The article has me curious about more of the psychological considerations of being a manager or leader. Life experiences do create the type of style you will have are you a manager or leader? I believe that there is some truth that based on experiences it can be predicted how a person will resolve issues, or motivate people.

Week 5 Empirical Search

After a long search I was able to locate an article on my research question, asking what is an effective strategy for business owners, shareholders, partners and investors, hire managers or leaders? The article I selected was titled “Managerial Competences And Exemplary Leadership In The Lodging Industry: An Empirical Study. Even as this article focused on the lodging industry I was able to take away interesting information based on the testing results.

Just as I have suspected many leadership practices are found in managerial competences.  Results showed similarities in the conceptual and creative domain, the interpersonal and leadership domain and the administrative and human resource domain. The article showed similarities and differences between managers affiliated with a chain establishment. Using age as part of the equation there was a perception difference were the importance for the good of the company and customer was placed. The size of the lodging chain also played a part as to how managers thought activities should be conducted.

The article served as a better understanding that there is leadership in managing, and employers should look to hire someone that holds a balance. A manager need to understand when it is time to lead and when it is time to let the systems in place along with the people work for the better of the business.

Week Four Finding Articles

This week I continued with my research on Managers and Leadership, I narrowed my searching, asking the question what is the better strategy for business, hiring managers or leaders. I continue to see that many believe they are one in the same, a good manager can lead, and a good leader can manage. This week, I learned depending on the type of organization, a business owner might choose either or. Leaders appear to be more “blue collar” type professions, people or workers, while managers are more, “white collar”. This week I had small frustration finding articles that were available. I found several that sounded as they could serve my research either through title, abstract, or what the author believed management and leadership truly was, but these articles were not available, I would get a “hold” as a return. I want to learn, or answer the question, how does one become a leader and a manager, and what situations call for leadership or management.

I started my search using the Academic Search Premier, checking scholarly peer reviewed journals, as well as periodicals. I used the words, managers, difference, and leaders in each search line. I returned 1,337 articles. The majority of returns were articles about nursing or managing education in schools. I was searching for something more towards business, I would have settled for something with a time management approach. I went back to the articles I did believe would serve my needs, but were unavailable or returned with a “hold” status, and I clicked on similar titles. Searching through several pages of returns, I eventually found two articles that help me with my research and were available.
